I'm sorry, but I just had a baby...

How long can you use the excuse "I'm sorry, but I just had a baby"? This topic has come up recently on my message board, in my MOPS group, and in the locker room at the gym. Maybe I'm just bringing it up all the time. ;) I was telling a woman at the gym that my daughter was seven months old and while I'm trying to lose weight I still frequently use the excuse "Well I'm fat because I just had a baby." She said "My son is three years old and I still use that excuse." Nice! It made me wonder how long you can use the excuse (my thoughts are 18 years for each kid), and what you can be excused for...this is the list I came up with.

  • I'm sorry I'm fat, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I have bags under my eyes, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I forgot about that work/school project, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry my house is a mess, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I forgot to go to my appointment to sign/finish my taxes, but I just had a baby. (This may or may not have happened to me recently...)
  • I'm sorry you came over and I don't have fresh squeezed lemonade and a hot from the oven cake prepared for you, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I'm weeping at Johnson and Johnson's commercials, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry my camera is with me at every second of the day, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I skipped church on Sunday, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I'm wearing my maternity pants, but I just had a baby. (Seriously, who doesn't miss those elastic waists? Especially the day after a holiday!)
  • I'm sorry I can't come over past seven, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I can't go to that really fun-filled family reunion, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry hubby, but you know, I just had a baby...maybe tomorrow night. ;)
  • I'm sorry my shirt is covered in food stains, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I have to cross my legs when I laugh or sneeze, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I can't see that new action movie starring The Rock, but I just had a baby...bummer!
  • I'm sorry it's 65 degrees and I'm sweating, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I don't have dinner made, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I smell like poo, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I can't stay and continue to talk in this awkward conversation, but I just had a baby.
  • I'm sorry I'm so behind on the laundry that I have to buy new underwear just to have a clean pair, but I just had a baby. (I swear this one hasn't happened to me but I got close when Clara was a newborn!)
Yeah, definitely planning on using the baby excuse for a little while. ;) And, for a lot of people by the time your first child isn't a baby anymore, you have another one coming...And then you can say "I'm sorry, but I have two young children!" To my beautiful daughter, you've given me a lot of love, joy, happiness, tears, laughs and stretch marks but I also thank you for getting me out of a lot of situations I wouldn't otherwise have an excuse for! ;)
